The Godfather, book review

” I will make him an offer he cannot refuse” this quote itself is a classic. After finishing the whole book I kind of found it hard to get over it and especially this specific line. Before starting this book I had wondered what was so special about an underworld mafia story but after getting to know the story and the cast I can say that this is a special one. The book is about the underworld criminals of 1940’s and the intimate relation of the Corleone family. Don Corleone who migrated to USA from Sicily at the age of twelve grew up in US to be a decent citizen but soon he learned that the society favoured money and not its citizens. From the clutches of harsh life he turned out to make rules for himself and believed in that. With the help of two of his trusted man he made an empire but which was safeguarded with relations and favours. he helped anyone in need only asked friendship in return and for the people close enough to him Don Corleone was GODFATHER. Another important aspect of the story was the transition of Michael Corleone, he was a war hero and a young fellow at that time who did not wish to join the family business but situations unfortunately did not favour him. His father was shot, his true love Apollo was killed and so was his brother Sonny all of this shaped the new Corleone who took grudges. Though he always said that everything was business it was pretty clear that everything was personal for the third son of Don Corleone. Towards the end of the story I ad started to empathise with the characters and that was the work of the writer. Mario Puzo did an excellent job of bringing this amazing story to all of us in the form of book. The film adaptations are also well acclaimed for and I personally loved the acting of all casts. The other important element was that this book had so many interesting characters for example Luca Brasi was an intimidating and mysterious character especially for his devotion towards the godfather. The book also captured character development and I thoroughly enjoyed that essence. My only opinion is that some stories were said carried out way too much especially the story of Sonny’s lover and the abortionist doctor though such details were not given much importance in the film. Yet as always books sparks more imagination and creativity than films. The Godfather was the first book that I had read of Puzo and with that I have already became his fan. Overall Godfather was a phenomenal book ad a masterpiece in story telling, it indeed is a modern classic and I am sure that this book would continue to entertain generations to come….
